Legiocon IX: Gamemasters Wanted

posted Mar 1, 2011, 7:55 AM by Legions IV Hire Convention   [ updated Mar 2, 2011, 1:54 PM ]

Legiocon Needs You!  In our ongoing effort to bring you a fun filled weekend of playing with tin soldiers, grognarding, junk food, and annihilating your opponent from the field of battle, we need your help to run games and organize battles.  Anyone can play a game, but it takes a true leader of men (and women, what with the changing times we live in) to manage and run a wargame.

We're looking for dedicated people who can commit to running and managing a game of their choosing at the upcoming Legiocon gaming convention.  We've even moved into the 21st century (ten years late) by adding an electronic sign up form.  We're not sure exactly how it works, but our computer beeps at us, some fans whir, a game plan prints out and we dance a happy dance every time someone signs up to run a new game.

"But what sort of game should I run?" you might be thinking.  Well worry not, the options are almost limitless.  Whatever you want to run is a good guideline.  Have a boardgame you've never found anyone to play with?  Sign up to play that.  An obscure miniatures game that, in exacting detail, simulates the actions of a French resistance action cell in occupied Nazi France?  Go ahead and lay out the details, plan the game, sign up and VIVE LA FRANCE!  Just want a quick game of Magic: The Gathering?  Open the form and sign up to run it!

Maybe your plans and ambitions reach beyond just a simple game.  After all, what is one game, compared to a series of competitions culminating in a final glorious battle for ultimate supremacy and title of "Best General of All Time?" (Or weekend, as the case may be.)  If this appeals to you, why not run a Tournament?  The Warhammer 40k tournament has been a staple at Legiocon for years, and we're always looking for dedicated people to run a new tournament.  If you are willing to shoulder this awesome responsibility, we'll gladly help set you up so that your tournament is a success.

So sign up now!  Run a Game!  Crush your enemies and see them driven before you, and hear the lamentations of their women! Kick the tires and light the fires!  Damn the torpedoes, all ahead full!  Join up and see you in September!

Legiocon VIII enters Planning Stages

posted Nov 18, 2010, 7:55 PM by Legions IV Hire Convention   [ updated Nov 19, 2010, 9:55 AM ]

Planning is underway for Legiocon eight in February!  We've dug out the ammo crates and powered up the diesel genny at Legiocon HQ.  Holed up in our fortress of squalitude, we'll be working throughout the winter to bring you the best possible gaming convention in February 2011!

We've made some changes to the format this year, as we are now pleased to announce our new weekend pass option!  For only $10, you get access to three days of gaming bliss.  Even at the height of the Cold War, you couldn't hope to get a deal this good!  Our pricing structure has also changed, please check the Legicon VIII page for more details on entry fees.

We're also looking to build on the success of our previous conventions tournaments, in fact we've gone tournament crazy!  Currently we are planning to have tournaments for; Warhammer 40k, Warhammer Fantasy Battles, Magic:The Gathering, Flames of War and Heroscape.  If you want to run a tournament, please don't hesitate to contact us.  Make sure to include a detailed plan to show both the structure of your tournament and your ability to manage the complex undertaking of organizing and running a well put together tournament.  Help us help you to make your tournament a success.

Don't let all the tournament talk fool you though, we haven't forgotten our roots as Winnipeg's Premier Tabletop Miniature Gaming Convention.  If you are interested in running a game, we have uploaded the new Gamemaster Application Form.  We know that without the support of hobbyists such as yourself, we wouldn't be able to hold this convention, so this year we are giving back to our volunteers.  Your entry fee for the weekend will be waived if you run a game (or games) for three (3) or more time slots.  It's just our way of saying thanks for helping make Legiocon even bigger and better than ever!

Success! Thanks for making Legicon Great!

I would like to thank everyone who attended and helped out at Legiocon. The convention was a success with approximately 90 paid admissions. There was a wide variety of games with over a dozen different types played.

We are still waiting for photo contributions. If you have any pictures from the games, please send them along with a brief blurb so we can post them.

I would like to personally thank Garth from Maxx Collectibles and Mark from Games Workshop for their tournament support. Also, thanks to John from Pendragon and Garth from Maxx Collectibles for their donations to the door prize and John from the 17 Wing Strategy Gaming Club for hosting the show.

We are planning on expanding the show for February, so keep checking back for Legiocon Convention details.  We'd love to see more tournaments being run, and we will have our gamemaster application form up soon, remember, the more time you give us, the better we can accommodate and support your tournament and game!

Thanks again,

Flames Of War Confirmed!

posted Sep 20, 2010, 9:05 AM by Legions IV Hire Convention   [ updated Sep 20, 2010, 10:45 AM ]

Excellent news for the WW2 aficionados, and specifically for those who play one of the hottest new games on the market today; Flames of War has been confirmed for Legiocon VII!  For those not in the know, Flames of War is a tabletop miniature game set during the second world war, and focuses primarily on the European East and Western theatres of operation.  Using a simplified rules system, Flames of War offers all the action and excitement of a WW2 Blockbuster Spectacular, without having to worry about deflection angles or impact kinetics of shells.

Sound fun?  Excellent!  Strap on your command helmet and saunter on down to Legiocon on Saturday (details in Schedule) for the demo game.  Learn how to play, and get stuck in with other players as you attempt to win the day for either the axis or the allies!  Have your own Flames of War army?  Bring it down, depending on time/scale issues, it might be integrated into the battle.  If not, you can always register a game (Friday or Sunday preferably, we're getting very full/short on space on Saturday!) and host an open challenge!

We are also looking for interested parties who are knowledgeable about the game to host and run a second demo game on the Sunday at Legiocon, submit an application if you think you are up for the challenge!

Two Weeks till Legiocon!

posted Sep 14, 2010, 9:36 AM by Legions IV Hire Convention   [ updated Sep 14, 2010, 10:04 AM ]

Hi folks, figured I'd put up a little update to let you know how things are going on our side of Legiocon.

We're only two weeks away and we're still getting applications to run games!  We aren't complaining about the workload, in fact we're ecstatic that so many people are volunteering their time to run a game at Legiocon.  If you still haven't submitted your application, make sure you do it soon, our space is filling up!

Due to some concern, we have instituted a mandatory age requirement for Legiocon, namely that children 12 years of age or under shall be accompanied by a responsible person (16 years of age or older) to ensure their safety, and the safety of the other attendees at Legiocon.  We're hoping this makes the convention a better experience for everyone, and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

We're very excited about the Warhammer tournaments, as the 40k tournament will be scored differently than usual, and this will be the first time the 8th edition WHFB rules make an appearance at Legiocon. It should be interesting to see how things turn out.  There's still some space available for the tournaments, avoid the first come first serve on the day of the tournament by pre-registering today!

We're also very happy to see the number of games where supplies will be provided, since we believe that part of the hobby is introducing the joy of miniature wargaming to others.  The Heroscape games for example, will be run using pre-built armies supplied by a generous volunteer, and will start with some introductory games, followed by a tournament!  Bring your best army, or take one of the supplied ones, and compete in a fun and friendly atmosphere! Wings of War, on Friday evening, is a fun, fast paced game that can be learned in five minutes, and just like Heroscape, all materials to play the game will be provided.  If you're new to the hobby, be sure to make time to check out these two games!

Finally, some publicity for new games making their way into our schedule.  Our Mordheim GMs have been very generous, and will be running the intense medieval fantasy squad game of brutal city fighting for not one, but two days, with an extended Saturday slot.  Talisman 4th edition is making an appearance as well, and it's coming fully loaded with every expansion for the game so far! Magic: The Gathering is also making a return to Legiocon, so dust off your deck and get ready to throw down against other master wizards in this fast paced collectible card game of magic and intrigue.

So you can see we're cooking up some great stuff in two weeks!
We hope you can make it down to see all these games live in action at Legiocon!

Air Warfare Takes Off at Legiocon

posted Aug 18, 2010, 8:25 AM by Legions IV Hire Convention   [ updated Aug 18, 2010, 7:57 PM ]

The skies will be filled with the roar of propellers and the scream of jet turbines at Legiocon Seven!  We're not sure if it is the venue's proximity to an airbase, but we already have four games of intense aerial action scheduled for the convention, covering a large swath of aerial history up to the modern age.  So what are you waiting for Maverick?  Get out your aviators and leather bomber jacket, throw on a flying scarf and swagger on down to Legiocon Seven, Sept 24th 25th and 26th at the 17 Wing Recreation Complex!

The action starts on Friday with "Wings of War",  an engagingly simple dogfighting game set during the Great War.  Come on down to see Spads and Camels battle it out with Albatrosses' and TriPlanes, or hop into the pilot seat and take to the skies in this beginner friendly game!

For World War II enthusiasts, a game of "Check Your Six" (CY6!) will be run on Saturday.  Mission details are currently hazy, but expect a conflict between the glorious might of the Soviet Union Red Army Air Force and the Reich's Premier fighter squadrons of the Luftwaffe, as they clash in bitter dogfights in a desperate attempt to wrestle air superiority from the other.

The Korean War saw jet fighters make their first true impact on aerial combat, and Sunday's game will showcase that, as nimble MiG-15 fighters attempt to shoot down the outdated but still deadly B-29 SuperFortress bomber.  The bombers are sitting ducks, but pack a punch with defensive weaponry, and are of course escorted by fighter aircraft piloted by hardened combat veterans of World War II.  The game uses the "Check Your Six: Jet Age" ruleset.

The third game launching from our Flight Deck is "Air War:C21", a game detailing the high speed and lightning fast nature of modern jet combat.  Players will be in control of modern fighters, and will engage in a specially prepared scenario in a hypothetical "East meets West" conflict.  Bring your G-Suit and a full load of flares and chaff, the modern age is exemplified by the deadly air to air missile, positioning still matters, but ranges are extended and a single hit usually results in a kill.

Check out our Schedule for timings!
Or Sign Up to run your own Air Combat (or any other type of) Game!
